Meet "Mockingbird"! Mockingbird is a 6-string acoustic lap steel and a collaboration with Texas artist, Billy Hassell. The body is an old, home made violin case of undetermined age. The plywood construction suggests less than 100 years old, based on other cases I've used. I had noticed for years the way railroad track spacing (looking down the track in perspective) resembled regular guitar fret spacing. The frets get closer and closer together as you go up the neck. I asked Billy to help me pull this off as I am not a painter. Most of Billy's art contains strictly objects/plants/animals found in nature, however the railroad tracks infused a rare human element. The neck is oak, with a cedar veneer headstock. The bridge/saddle is hand-carved oak. The "trapeze" style tailpiece was purchased. The tuners are chrome open gear.
